OVERVIEW

Making waves is a project I hold near and dear to my heart. I was a Senior at Tulane University studying political economy and on track to go to law school when the idea of making this film came to me. I knew very little about filmmaking but saw an amazing story and knew I had to tell it.  In many ways making this film changed the trajectory of my life and my career. After being fully immersed in a new culture and world that I knew very little about, I knew what I wanted to do with my life.

Making Waves explores the little known surf subculture in New Orleans and its surrounding waters. The feel-good documentary spotlights Pontcha Surf Club, founded by New Orleans local Keegan McGuire, who wanted to reestablish the surf counterculture that existed in Louisiana in the 1960s and 1970s. The film features interviews from McGuire, Billy Hingle--the first known Louisiana surfer, as well as local board shaper, Shane Medere. The film is emblematic of the culture and soul of New Orleans, characterized by a strong sense of community and laissez les bon temps rouler mindset.

The film was made in partnership with Vans DIY Project where students pitched ideas for a community inspired event driven by the motto “Do It Yourself”. When I expressed my vision for surfing in Louisiana, people thought it was crazy. I didn’t even know if it was possible. It felt about as DIY as it gets. Little did I know there was an entire history and community behind surfing in Louisiana and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share their story with the world.

As a part of our partnership with the team at Vans, I hosted 3 live events, showcasing the film and organzing brand activations for Vans to tie everything together. Everything about this project was DIY.

I’ve learned a lot since making this film and I sometimes struggle to share it because it’s not at the level or quality I currently work at. Nevertheless, this film started my career and inspired me to tell human driven stories.  Making this film meant so much to me and I hope you enjoy it.
